Spring 2026: Spatial Audio II

Spatial Audio II is dedicated to the composition and performance of spatial music: We will explore historical and state-of-the art concepts in the composition and performance of spatial music, while also covering the basics of the relevant technologies. This happens in hands-on sessions with our spatial audio systems at Rich Computer Center and Couch. The class will equip students with skills to use space as a parameter for artistic expression in music: from the diffusion of Acousmatic Music to Higher Order Ambisonics compositions and experimental spatial techniques. An introduction do diffusion will be delivered by Jonty Harrison (virtual).

Students realize a project of their choice in teams or as individuals. These projects can be focused on composition, performance, research, or development. Compositions and performances will be presented in a public concert at the end of the 2026 Spring semester, in cooperation with the UGA Dancz Center for New Music.

This interdisciplinary course is part of a two-semester focused curriculum on spatial music and media art, funded through the 2025-2026 Provost Teaching and Learning Initiative. Combined with Spatial Audio I, students get an in depth introduction to the topic. Spatial Audio I - focusing on interactive immersive installations - is not a requirement for this class.
